Leadership is a term typically associated with business or the corporate world. In this arena, we think of leadership as a senior executive, regional director, or head of a project team.
The reality is that leadership exists in just about every aspect of our lives. Leadership is found in families, groups, sports, education and church. There is even self-leadership, which is the ability to motivate yourself to do what you desire to do. That fact is, everyone is a Leader, either by choice or default.
Leadership is simply the interaction where influence occurs. The influence can be positive or negative, focused consciously or unintentionally, and the impact can be minimal or maximal. A leader is the individual in the interaction who knowingly or unknowingly creates the greater influence in the other person.
Great leaders are not only able to motivate, inspire, and bring out greatness in others, but also in themselves. The question isn't whether or not you are a leader; the question is... how will you lead? How will you show up in each area of your life – work, family, team, neighborhood, etc.
The key to being a great leader is to be a conscious leader. This means choosing how you want to “show up” in any given environment and/or any given situation. In order to choose, you first need to be aware of how you’re showing up and what advantages or disadvantages are of that way of being. This is how you become a more conscious leader.
